Choosing the Right Tools for Urban Sketching

When starting out in architectural sketching, one of the most common questions is: “What tools do I need?” The answer is refreshingly simple — not much. But choosing the right tools for your style and environment can make the process smoother and more enjoyable.

Start Light and Simple
Urban sketching is about mobility. You’ll often be drawing on benches, standing at a corner, or leaning against a wall. Carrying a lightweight kit is essential.

Here’s a suggested beginner’s setup:

  • A sketchbook with medium-thick paper (A5 or B5 is ideal for portability)
  • A fine liner or fountain pen with waterproof ink
  • A compact pencil and eraser
  • Optional: a small watercolor set and a water brush

Line First, Color Later
Most architectural sketchers begin with line work — outlining the structure, perspective, and main features — before adding color or shading. Choose pens that suit your hand: some prefer ultra-fine tips for detail, others like flexible nibs for expressive lines.

If you’re working with watercolor, waterproof ink is a must to avoid bleeding. Many sketchers enjoy using a water brush for its convenience — no cup of water needed!

The Joy of Limitation
While it’s tempting to pack every brush, pen, and marker you own, using fewer tools often leads to more cohesive and focused work. With fewer choices, you spend more time drawing and less time deciding.

Test & Tweak
Don’t worry about getting it perfect from the start. Everyone’s style is different. Some sketchers draw only in ink, others add notes and arrows, some go full color. Over time, you’ll find the kit that fits you best.

Remember — it’s not about fancy materials. It’s about showing up, observing, and putting pen to paper. The best tool is the one you’ll actually use.
